Zubimendi REVEALS why he REJECTED Liverpool move

Martin Zubimendi was Liverpool’s number one target for the midfield in the summer transfer window, but the 25-year-old decided to stay in Spain.

The Real Sociedad and Spain star impressed for his nation in the final of the Euros against England after replacing Rodri at half-time, and was reportedly on his way to Liverpool until he changed his mind.

Zubimendi played 45 times for Real Sociedad last season and has featured in their opening four La Liga matches this campaign. He was revealed as Liverpool’s top midfield target, but the Reds were not able to get a deal over the line and Zubimendi decided to stay in Spain.

Ryan Gravenberch has emerged as Arne Slot’s first choice in the holding midfield role and the Dutchman has been a big part of Liverpool’s perfect start to the season, looking increasingly impressive each week.

Despite Gravenberch’s good start to the season though, a Liverpool return for Zubimendi could still be on the cards.

Why did Zubimendi reject Liverpool?

Zubimendi decided to stay at Real Sociedad, the club's he's represented since he was 11, and the Spaniard doesn’t appear to regret his decision.

“Real Sociedad for me is my life, I think I have spent half my life there,” he revealed to MARCA (as translated by Sport Witness). “A lot of what I am is part of La Real, it is my life.”

Real Sociedad reportedly promised Zubimendi a new deal if he stayed at the club but this has not come without its problems and the midfielder is yet to put pen to paper on a renewed contract.

Although he is yet to sign a new contract, the 10-capped Spaniard told MARCA: “My friends are clear that whatever I decide will be the best. There is no pressure whatsoever.”

Liverpool’s holding midfield problem

Zubimendi became the fourth defensive midfielder to reject Liverpool in the past two years and the position is arguably one of the Reds' weakest on the pitch.

Despite Gravenberch’s good start to the season, Liverpool lack depth in the holding midfield role. Wataru Endo is the obvious back up but he is 31 years old and may not be a long-term option for Slot.

Tyler Morton also remains at the club but he lacks Premier League experience and was subject to a lot of interest this summer.

One long-term option for Liverpool could be Stefan Bajcetic, who is out on loan at Red Bull Salzburg this season, but again the youngster lacks Premier League experience and so Liverpool could look to return for Zubimendi or move on to another midfield target over the next few months.
