The 25-year-old has been the definition of a ‘hit and miss’ player since he made the move from Benfica, and his apparent ability to miss a clear-cut chance before scoring an absolute worldie has frustrated supporters.

Now, the time is right for Liverpool to move on from Darwin Nunez.

Nunez’s repeated struggles

In his final season at Benfica, the then 22-year-old scored 34 goals and provided a further four assists in just 41 games in all competitions.

His best return since came last season, when he managed 18 goals and 13 assists in 54 appearances.

The step up from the Portuguese league to the Premier League isn’t an easy one to make, but Nunez is two and a half years into his time in England and actually appears to have regressed under Arne Slot.

This season, the 25-year-old has recorded six goals and five assists in 32 matches. If he were to make 54 appearances like he did last season he’d be on track for 10 goals and 8 assists, a pitiful return for the man wearing Liverpool’s famous number 9.

Why it is time to move on

Some of the names linked with Liverpool who would take Nunez’s place in the squad include Alexander Isak, Joao Pedro and Benjamin Sesko.

Nunez is putting up 0.6 goals & assists per 90 minutes this season, by comparison Isak has 1.03, Joao Pedro has 0.66 and Sesko has 0.82.

All three alternatives are also younger than Nunez and play in weaker sides, suggesting their numbers could be improved if they were to slot into the Reds’ attack.

There are also a number of parties interested in picking up Nunez if he were to move on from Anfield.

Anfield Watch exclusively revealed that the club had turned down a £70 million offer from Al-Hilal in January as they were holding out for a fee closer to £85 million and AC Milan are also reportedly keen on the striker.

It is clear to see why Liverpool are ready to sell Darwin Nunez, and the risk of being left behind by rivals if they persist with a player who has simply not been good enough is too great to ignore.
