Liverpool were far from their best during their most recent Premier League game against Southampton at Anfield on Saturday.

Although the Reds ended up winning 3-1 by the final whistle, they initially fell 1-0 behind with fans inside Anfield wondering what had gone wrong with their team.

Arne Slot was reported to be severely annoyed with his players at half-time and his team talk and changes at the break definitely stirred something within the ranks.

Liverpool bounced back to take command against the Saints, easing into the lead and remaining in total control of the race for the Premier League title.

Arguably, Trent Alexander-Arnold was the only player in Red who performed anywhere near his best in the first half and he was influential throughout the second half too.

The 26-year-old has appeared increasingly happy - and productive - on the field in the last few weeks. Several fans remarked on social media throughout the weekend that Trent was smiling more and appearing more at ease.

Trent turns it on against Southampton

He played 90 minutes against the Saints and punched in some impressive numbers throughout the contest.

He made two interceptions and three tackles. Overall he won seven of his nine duels on the day.

Trent also made 82 of his 93 passes attempted for a completion rate of 88 percent. Two of those passes were classified as key passes and he also completed six of his 10 long passes.

From his right-back station, he also completed four of four dribbles attempted.

Against the team bottom of the league, in a game where plenty of his teammates failed to make the grade, it was Trent who carried the fight to the opposition.

That demonstrates a level of unrivalled commitment, which can only be encouraging for fans.

“We played with intent, with meaning and with purpose,” Trent said afterwards. “And you could see that from the start, we had a point to prove, we knew we needed to get three points and that’s what we did.

“Outstanding performance second half, really showed the quality we’ve got and controlled the game in the way that we wanted to.”

If Trent is indeed planning on taking off for Real Madrid at the end of the season on a free transfer, he certainly isn’t playing like it.

Sure, Los Blancos might be able to blow the Reds out of the water with their offer of a blockbuster contract and signing on fee but if Trent was to be happy - and play in a team that is set to dominate England and potentially Europe - then he is right at home.

Should we take this as a good sign in potential contract talks between Trent and the club?
