The 26-year-old has won every available club honour during his time as a first-team player for the Reds and fans are devastated to see him go.

And there has been an outpouring of emotion during what would appear to be the final few weeks of Trent’s Liverpool career.

Not everything that has been written about the right-back in the last few days has been flattering with his status as club legend seemingly up for discussion.

And inevitably the player in question is bound to hear what’s been said about him in the media and the online space.

Trent 'saddened' by reaction

Now Defensa Central, a Real Madrid publication, claims to have the inside track on how Trent has been feeling about the reaction to the news reports about his exit.

The defender has been left “saddened”, according to a report, with Trent not understanding the allegations of treachery being levied against him.

“The player is saddened by the way some fans are treating his departure, especially those who accuse him of not leaving any transfer money,” the report says.

“The player, who doesn't want to comment on the matter publicly, has spoken privately with those close to him, and they have a clear response to these accusations.”

It goes on to detail Real Madrid’s bid for Trent ahead of the January transfer window opening, reportedly valued at around £20 million.

Liverpool declined to negotiate a mid-season transfer for Alexander-Arnold, leaving the player allegedly bewildered about fans accusing him of denying the club a fee.

“For this reason, the English footballer doesn't understand the criticism he's been receiving in recent hours.”

It’s likely Liverpool made a calculation back in January, that having Trent in the team for the final six months of the season would in the long run prove more valuable than a quick £20m hit in the transfer market.

However given Trent was coming off an injury heading into the new year, and has suffered two more injury blows since then, the wisdom of that decision can certainly be called into question.

Nonetheless there is no doubt that fans will be sorry to see one of their own go. Let’s hope he gets the respect he deserves if he ultimately decides to pursue a career elsewhere.
