Liverpool have received some very encouraging news that could hint at Trent Alexander-Arnold being closer to an agreement over a new deal.

Real Madrid have been hot in their pursuit to land the right-back. He's yet to sign a contract extension with his current deal set to expire at the end of the season.

And there were some reports that Real Madrid were 98% close to reaching an agreement with Alexander-Arnold over a new deal.

There's definitely a strong consensus in Spain that the deal is close and that the 26-year-old is set to depart for pastures new.

But things might not be that clear cut according to a new report in Sky Sports. In fact, Liverpool have good reasons to believe they might have actually come closer to coming to an agreement with Alexander-Arnold's camp themselves.

Liverpool handed Trent Alexander-Arnold lifeline

Sky Sports have claimed that there is no agreement yet with Real Madrid and Alexander-Arnold. In fact their report claims Alexander-Arnold's camp have distanced themselves a little bit over the last few weeks which has made Real Madrid's representatives 'angry.'

According to the report, this has led to Real Madrid reaching out to Joshua Kimmich, who they see as an ideal alternative option.

The report claims Kimmich would be open to a move and Real see it as an ideal move considering he can also play in other positions and he is also available on a free transfer.

It's clear Real Madrid have not given up on Alexander-Arnold, but his camp distancing themselves and making the Spanish side angry is a very big lifeline for the Reds.

Is that a sign that perhaps Liverpool are coming closer to an agreement over a new deal? We certainly think so. If the report is to be believed you have to think so.

There's no other reason why Alexander-Arnold would suddenly grow a little bit colder towards a move to Real Madrid unless it was because he was convinced he was going to get the deal he wants at Liverpool.

This could very well be his Steven Gerrard moment, the one where he rejects to big ambitious club with lots of money to stay at Anfield. And that would be amazing news for the club.
