The deep-lying player has played 44 times for Manuel Pellegrini’s side, including 15 La Liga appearances this season. His form has attracted the attention of several sides with Liverpool’s recruitment team keen.

Johnny, who was raised in Brazil, remained at Betis through the January transfer window and the club have now rewarded him with a new contract.

On Tuesday it was announced that Johnny had extended his deal through to 2030 with his previous terms expiring in 2029.

Spurs negotiate Johnny clause

According to Diario de Sevilla, the new deal includes a salary increase which reflects his importance to his side.

It reveals that Johnny’s representatives recently met with the club to talk about a new deal and also states that they fielded an enquiry from Wolves over the winter.

Liverpool might opt to make a bid over the summer transfer window with back-up to Ryan Gravenberch required and an alternative to Martin Zubimendi still needing to be sourced.

However, Johnny’s transfer fate could well be in TOTTENHAM’s hands.

Spurs sold Giovani Lo Celso to Betis last summer and as part of the deal they negotiated first refusal on Johnny - a so-called “preferential purchase option”.

According to the media source, this clause can be activated for €25 million, meaning Spurs end up getting a bargain.

That clause will be active between June 1 and June 30, 2025, and if they fail to activate it then Liverpool might have a chance to strike.
