Liverpool Transfer News Today: New midfield TARGET, defender deal CLOSE, Guehi CHANCE
Here’s our roundup of all the latest Liverpool transfer news today (Thursday August 22, 2024). The Reds are ‘extensively’ watching a new midfielder.
Liverpool watch Svensson
Liverpool are now keeping very close tabs on a 22-year-old midfielder out of Denmark who tracks like Eduardo Camavinga. Daniel Svensson could be what they've been looking for.
Football Transfers reports that Liverpool are 'extensively' watching FC Nordsjaelland prodigy Svensson right now. In fact, the Reds have had eyes on the player for a few months now.
Svensson is a 22-year-old midfielder who can also play at full-back. Last season he primarily played in the middle, though Juventus apparently saw him as a long-term option at left-back and considered a move earlier in the window.
Van den Berg's decision
Liverpool will learn the fate of Sepp van den Berg later today, according to reports. He’s set to decide his future.
Dutch outlet De Telegraaf reports that Sepp van den Berg will decide his future later today. This comes after claims from numerous sources that Liverpool have had bids worth over £25m from multiple clubs.
Per The Times, Bayer Leverkusen and Brentford lead the charge here - one of those two almost certainly land the player. Exactly who Van den Berg picks, however, isn't entirely clear but we should learn soon.
Brentford confident in Van den Berg race
One Premier League club is confident of sealing a complete agreement with Liverpool - and it could come today.
The Times reports that Brentford feel confident they can secure a deal with Liverpool for Sepp van den Berg. That's despite the huge threat of Bayer Leverkusen, who also want the player.
Both clubs are thought to have struck pre-agreements with Liverpool to sign the Dutchman. Van den Berg will move for over £25m, possibly approaching £30m with add-ons.
Reds eye another goalkeeper
Despite it appearing only a matter of time before Liverpool complete a deal for Valencia's Giorgi Mamardashvili, the Reds seem to be in the market for yet another goalkeeper this summer.
According to reports from Mundo Deportivo, the Reds have been closely monitoring Espanyol keeper Joan Garcia, despite speculation of a verbal agreement with Arsenal to become their new number two.
The Georgian is viewed as a long-term replacement for Alisson Becker in 2025, while Garcia could be signed to take the place of current wantaway number two Caoimhin Kelleher.
Williams heads to Morecambe
Rhys Williams' latest move to Morecambe is seen as an opportunity for regular first-team football, which he believes is crucial for his development.
Expressing his enthusiasm for the loan, Williams said, "I'm delighted, the manager has given me a chance to come and play football here and that's the main thing."
He also highlighted his ambitions for the season, adding, "I want him to be able to trust me, I want to come in and impress the fans so hopefully we have a successful season."
Williams’ decision to join Morecambe was influenced by conversations with Adams and some of his new teammates, which left him confident about the move.
"I spoke to a few of the boys and they were all really complimentary about the club, the staff, and fans, so there was only one place I wanted to go," he said.
Newcastle ready to move on from Guehi
One of Liverpool’s rivals for Marc Guehi has turned to new targets. The Reds could have a clear run here.
The Athletic reports that Newcastle United have stepped up their interest in alternative targets after struggling to strike a deal with Crystal Palace for Marc Guehi.
Newcastle have tried with several bids to sign the England defender but Palace have rejected them all. The Eagles want £70m all-in for the player, while Newcastle can't go above £65m.
And so they're now talking with other clubs. One of those is Bayer Leverkusen, with Newcastle hoping to get their hands on Edmond Tapsoba. Chelsea's Axel Disasi is another who interests those on Tyneside.
Of course, this could all simply be to put pressure on Palace to sell but as we learned yesterday, they're not the only ones considering a move for Guehi.
Liverpool also like the player and with both Joe Gomez and Sepp van den Berg potentially moving on, there could be space for Guehi at Anfield. News that Newcastle could be moving on would be welcome there, then, as it suggests that the Reds could have a free run at the 24-year-old.
