Florentino Perez and Real Madrid frequently set their sights on Liverpool players. Not all of them say yes.

It's no secret that Trent Alexander-Arnold is a wanted man. Real Madrid smell blood in the water, knowing they could sign one of the world's best players on a free transfer.

It's far from the first time they've done this, even with Liverpool. Steve McManaman was one of the first star players to leave under the Bosman rule as he departed for Madrid.

Michael Owen was essentially signed because of an expiring contract. Liverpool 'cashed in' for all of £8m (plus Antonio Nunez) to sell their Ballon d'Or winner to Real Madrid one year before his deal expired.

Then there are the players Real Madrid outright signed from Liverpool: Xabi Alonso and Alvaro Arbeloa. Not to mention the catalogue of stars who rejected the Reds to sign for Los Blancos.

But not everyone says yes. Most do, of course, but a select few have rejected the overtures of Real Madrid and Florentino Perez.

Steven Gerrard said no - twice

As pointed out by Relovo. Steven Gerrard is one of remarkably few footballers to actively say no to a pursuing Real Madrid under Perez.

The Scouser had at least two real opportunities to head there - in 2005 and 2009. Both times Real Madrid pushed hard to sign Gerrard, both times he said no.

And that's not even counting the fact that Jose Mourinho also tried to sign Gerrard for Madrid. That one didn't get quite as far as the other times, however.

So will Alexander-Arnold make a similar choice? It's safe to say that Gerrard doesn't regret his decision to remain at Liverpool for essentially the entirety of his career.

Owen, though, certainly does appear to regret his own decision to leave.

The point is, yet again, signing for Real Madrid isn't actually all it's cracked up to be. For some, it absolutely is - but that doesn't mean Alexander-Arnold is one of them.
