Despite being in the second tier, he's seriously caught the eye. Enough that Liverpool were hoping to grab him this month, even if it meant leaving him on loan with the German club for the remainder of the campaign.
The Reds entered talks over a deal and were willing to break a transfer record to get Tzimas, as exclusively revealed by Anfield Watch. Again, it's pretty much unprecedented - Liverpool were ready to put £25m on the table for a second-tier player out of Germany.
But that wasn't enough. Tzimas didn't want to make the move to Anfield as he had concerns over playing time.
Now he's heading elsewhere - but Liverpool will be watching him up close.
Stefanos Tzimas to Brighton
Tzimas has gone to Brighton on transfer deadline day. Well, he's signed for them - he won't actually link-up with the Seagulls until the summer and remains on loan with Nurnberg.
This was the expected outcome. Anfield Watch revealed recently that Tzimas would be joining Brighton instead and now that's proven to be the case.
They'll pay around £20m to get Tzimas, per the BBC, and view him as one for the future. Though, we've got to point out that Brighton's history of selling players for profit makes this a particularly interesting one.
If Tzimas thrives there next season, Liverpool will be even more interested than they already are. Yes, he'd cost an absolute premium but it appears near-certain that the Reds would be willing to pay it.
