Pep Lijnders' short, unhappy adventure as head coach of Red Bull Salzburg is already at an end.

Jurgen Klopp’s former Liverpool assistant - once earmarked for the Anfield hotseat in his own right - took over at Salzburg in May after leaving Merseyside.

While the Red Bull-owned outfit finished runners-up in the Austrian Bundesliga last season, they had been champions 10 times in a row in the decade prior. There were high expectations on Salzburg and Lijnders from the get-go, given his ambitions as a No.1 coach.

He was also backed in the transfer market, adding Bobby Clark from Liverpool for a fee of around £10m among others. Also inbound was fellow Reds academy graduate Stefan Bajcetic, the Spaniard who was coveted by Barcelona in last summer’s transfer window.

Lijnders oversees Red Bull DISASTER

Liverpool selected Salzburg as the club they would like the midfielder to move to on loan as he sought to step up his game time after recovering from a serious injury. Alas, the season has not gone to plan for Lijnders or Bajcetic.

The Dutchman was relieved of his duties on Monday afternoon, just a couple of days after a Bundesliga win against Austria Klagenfurt. That wasn’t enough to spare Lijnders the sack as the Austrian season reaches the winter break.

Lijnders leaves the club with a less than 50 percent win ratio, in FIFTH place in the league table and 32nd in the Champions League.

He will not get the chance to work with incoming Red Bull Global Head of Football Klopp, who officially takes charge with the group on January 1.

Bajcetic's ICE COLD reaction

It also marks the end of the road working with Bajcetic, who has endured a torrid time in Austria so far.

He has been criticised by the media in that country while it was suggested from inside the Red Bull camp that Bajcetic - as well as Clark - were only in the team due to their pre-existing relationships with Lijnders.

Bajcetic has only started half the matches for Salzburg in the league this season and has failed to nail down a place in the Champions League too.

If those selections were a case of favouritism, then Bajcetic is not currently showing any signs of being distressed by the news that his boss has been toppled.

He was not in any mood for consolation on Monday afternoon, in the moments following the news of Lijnders’ sacking.

His first social media post after the news came just minutes after the confirmation.

It was a post on his Instagram Stories of an image originally posted on his main account the day before. It depicts the Spaniard in front of a stunning winter Alpine scene with snowcapped peaks in the background.

Fans of both Liverpool and Red Bull Salzburg will have to wait for a separate Bajcetic reaction to Lijnders' sacking.
