Liverpool prepare for MONSTER Darwin Nunez sale

Liverpool are gearing up for a major Darwin Nunez sale. It's one that could fund their summer transfers.

Anfield Watch exclusively revealed in January that Liverpool received a massive offer from Al-Hilal for Darwin Nunez. It was rejected, however.

Now, that still surprises many. The offer of around £75m was deemed inadequate by Liverpool, who wanted closer to £85m if they were to sell Nunez.

Mid-season, anyway. That was one of the two roadblocks here - Liverpool didn't want to let Nunez go halfway through the campaign.

They almost certainly wouldn't have been able to replace him with a financially-sound replacement and anyone coming would also have needed to get up to speed. It just didn't make sense to them.

Maybe it would have if Diogo Jota was more reliable but the no.20 has battle injury problems again this season. Those injuries left Liverpool reliant on Nunez as the only natural centre-forward so once more, letting him go mid-season felt problematic.

But what does that mean for the summer?

The Darwin Nunez sale

Anfield Watch understands that Liverpool are still open to selling Nunez. His exit is expected to be a part of a major summer overhaul of the attack, in fact.

This is something backed up by a source talking to 365Scores.

"During the last transfer window, specifically in January, we received an official offer from the Saudi club Al-Hilal to sign Nunez, but Liverpool was clear from the start that the player was not for sale," reports the outlet, quoting a Liverpool source.

"Currently, Liverpool has not received any official offers from Saudi league clubs to sign Nunez next summer, confirming that the club is not aware of any official interest at this time."

But the same source is adamant that Liverpool are open to selling later this year.

"There is nothing preventing us from considering selling Nunez this summer, but it depends on the size of the offer presented," says the source.

"There is no release clause in Nunez's contract, and we have not yet set an official selling price."

Again, this is in line with our understanding. Al-Hilal tried to sign Nunez and may well go for it again ahead of the FIFA Club World Cup.

Whether they offer £75m again, we're not sure - but Liverpool will hope so. Such a sale would go a very long way to funding some major transfers this summer.

If such an offer comes in, Liverpool are ready to sell.
