Richard Hughes is yet to prove himself as Liverpool’s sporting director, but this summer he will have the chance to make his mark on Arne Slot’s side.

In the two transfer windows that Hughes has presided over the Reds have completed deals for Federico Chiesa and Giorgi Mamardashvili, but the former has had little impact and the latter will not join until the summer.

Liverpool have enjoyed a successful first campaign under Hughes, with one hand already on the Premier League trophy, and the Scot’s former club Bournemouth are also having a season to remember.

Now, Hughes has the opportunity to recreate a Bournemouth masterstroke to really prove himself to the Anfield faithful.

Dean Huijsen’s special season

Since Hughes’ departure, his former side Bournemouth have been flying in the league - finding themselves within reach of a top four finish.

Much of the Cherries current squad was assembled under the guidance of Hughes, who appointed their current manager Andoni Iraola, but it is a signing that arrived after Hughes’ time that has made headlines recently.

Dean Huijsen, the 19-year-old revelation at centre-half, has been linked with a move to several top sides this season – including Liverpool.

The Spanish international’s quality is clear to see and has now been recognised by the Premier League, who have nominated Huijsen for the Signing of the Season award.

Huijsen, who arrived in a €15.2 million deal last summer, has been ever-present for Bournemouth since he broke into the starting XI in December.

Huijsen should be a priority for Liverpool

A huge overhaul is coming this summer at Anfield. The front-line will likely be the focus, with a number of high-profile departures expected, but there are other positions that need addressing too.

None of Liverpool’s current centre-back options have certain futures. Virgil van Dijk is out of contract is less than four months, Ibrahima Konate is the subject of interest from Real Madrid and PSG and Jarell Quansah and Joe Gomez will both have suitors this summer.

Therefore, it is likely a new central defender will be signed in the upcoming window, and Hughes could recreate Bournemouth’s genius Huijsen move.

Huijsen, who reportedly has a release clause of around £50 million, has proven he is capable of playing in the Premier League and may have also recently hinted he has an affinity for Slot’s side.

Richard Hughes should bring Huijsen to Anfield and then hopefully the teenage defender can win the PL Signing of the Season award next year too.
