Liverpool fans have given incredible backing to Richard Hughes in order to get an elite transfer over the line.

Liverpool need to sign a defender in the summer. That much seems clear at this point.

For one, Virgil van Dijk may well leave the club. The Dutchman's contract with Liverpool expires at the end of the season and we're yet to hear of a new one.

Now, Anfield Watch still maintains that Van Dijk will stay. His agent broke off contact with other clubs late last year intending to sign a contract with Liverpool.

At the same time, we fully expected a solid update by now. That's yet to arrive so as things stand, Van Dijk will be off.

But even if he does stay, Liverpool need to look at centre-backs. Joe Gomez could leave and his injury problems have reared their head once again.

Jarell Quansah did look back to his best - or very close to it - against Wolves but he's had a difficult season. Then there's Ibrahima Konate.

The Frenchman enters the final year of his won contract this summer. Paris Saint-Germain are very interested and Liverpool face a battle to keep him.

So with all of this uncertainty, a centre-back needs to be on the agenda. Maybe the Reds don't sign one - but they need to have one in mind incase everything falls apart.

Liverpool back Dean Huijsen transfer

Liverpool have been linked with Dean Huijsen this week after his fantastic debut campaign at Bournemouth. That, of course, is Richard Hughes' old club and while he didn't sign the defender, he'd have helped lead their initial scouting.

Liverpool have been doing their own scouting into Huijsen for some time. They were consistently linked in 2024 as he looked to leave Juventus after an impressive loan spell at AS Roma.

Ultimately, the Reds didn't move for him and Bournemouth snapped Huijsen up for a bargain price. His form means he could move again this summer thanks to a £55m release clause - and Liverpool fans don't want to miss out again.

Over 77 per cent of votes went to putting Huijsen at the top of the centre-back shortlist this summer. It's a massive amount and an incredible backing to Hughes to push forward and get a deal signed for the youngster.

£55m could end up looking like a bargain, in truth, given Huijsen is still only 19 and already performing like one of the best in the league. The fans want it, Liverpool reportedly want it - let's get him signed.
