If FSG and sporting director Richard Hughes fail to tie the 32-year-old to a new deal then he will be walking out of the door for free after eight glorious years on Merseyside.
And should Salah leave then Liverpool will require options in attack. While the likes of Cody Gakpo have shown they are capable of stepping into the breach, it’s a numbers game and Arne Slot is known to like working with six forwards.
Down a senior option in the potential absence of Salah, Liverpool would likely have to go into the market for a new signing.
Gordon is the chosen one
And the latest reports suggest the Reds could be going back for an old target should Salah depart.
Anthony Gordon was mentioned as a potential Liverpool signing last summer with Newcastle struggling to meet their PSR obligations. But the Reds opted not to pursue a deal as the North East side wanted Jarell Quansah included.
That meant Hughes walked away from the deal with Gordon going on to sign a new contract at St. James’ Park. However, according to CaughtOffside, Gordon is the chosen one to replace Salah.
“CaughtOffside have been advised by sources that Liverpool will set their sights on Newcastle’s Anthony Gordon again once a move away for Salah is confirmed,” a report reads.
It adds that Newcastle might be forced to offload players next summer due to PSR restrictions if they fail to qualify for the Champions League. Gordon, 23, has got six goals and five assists across 22 Premier League games so far this season.
His preferred position is left-wing but he has also featured on the right this season for Eddie Howe.
