Liverpool are admirers of Bayer Leverkusen sensation Alejandro Grimaldo and are said to be 'monitoring' the wing-back ahead of the summer transfer window.

Grimaldo joined Leverkusen for free last summer after leaving Benfica and the Barcelona academy product has been an absolute sensation since moving to the Bundesliga.

Guided by former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso, the 28-year-old has produced 11 goals and 15 assists in 41 appearances to date while playing as a left wing-back.

He has helped Die Werkself to the top of the Bundesliga table, DFB Pokal final and Europa League last eight as Alonso's side remain unbeaten in their hunt for a historic treble of trophies.

Unsurprisingly, Grimaldo has attracted interest from Europe's elite sides this summer, with Liverpool among the potential suitors according to one report.

LIVERPOOL 'ADMIRERS' OF ALEJANDRO GRIMALDO

According to FootballTransfers, Liverpool are admirers of the offensive-minded full-back, and are said to be 'monitoring his situation' ahead of this summer's transfer window.

The Reds are not the only club keeping tabs on the Spaniard, with title rivals Arsenal and Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich also keen on the two-cap international.

While there is no price tag currently set for Grimaldo, Leverkusen will struggle to keep a hold of the wing-back, as well as some of his teammates, amid interest from the biggest clubs on the continent this summer.

Whether Liverpool will be genuinely interested in pursuing Grimaldo remains to be seen, with the club's transfer wishlist likely to depend on who replaces Jurgen Klopp as manager at the end of the season.

Ruben Amorim of Sporting CP remains the priority candidate and uses a similar 3-4-3 system to Alonso at Leverkusen, meaning Grimaldo would have a natural place in a Liverpool team guided by the Portuguese coach.

However, his age profile and potential cost may force Liverpool to look elsewhere this summer - again, depending on who succeeds Klopp in the Anfield dugout.
