Trent Alexander-Arnold has been one of the brightest stars at Anfield since he first broke into the Liverpool side eight years ago.

It now looks like the 26-year-old’s time in Merseyside could be coming to an end however with less than six months remaining on his contract.

Although negotiations have been underway for some time to try and agree an extension with the Reds hometown hero, progress seems to have almost completely halted and rumours of an exit have intensified.

Real Madrid has an ambitious if not insulting approach knocked back earlier this month and speculation has grown as to whether they will return for the fullback before the transfer window slams shut on 3 February.

Real Madrid will not return for Trent in January

Despite rampant speculation, the latest report from Mundo Deportivo has revealed that a winter move for Alexander-Arnold has become untenable.

The report states that Liverpool’s ongoing title charge and Trent’s “roots in his city, as well as the relationship with the fans” make it impossible for the fullback to be willing to leave in January.

Despite this, the fact still remains that Liverpool’s vice-captain has less than six months remaining on his current deal and has been free to negotiate and sign a pre-contract agreement with an oversees club since 1 January.

“The conditions put on the table by [Liverpool] are not to the player's liking, as he believes he deserves a higher salary increase than the one being offered,” the report continues.

What does Trent’s future hold?

Although nothing has been agreed yet, and Alexander-Arnold gave supporters a sliver of hope with a cryptic celebration against West Ham recently, all signs seem to point to a Trent exit come June.

Bayern Munich are also rumoured to be interested in a free transfer for the scouser, but Los Blancos remain favourites to sign him in the summer.

Despite this, it looks as though Trent will spend the remainder of the season with his boyhood club and Liverpool supporters will hope his mind can be changed before it is too late.

With a difficult run-in ahead, Liverpool must remain focussed on their football and hopefully, no matter the outcome of his transfer situation, Trent will be lifting the Premier League trophy at Anfield in May.
