Liverpool entered the January transfer window fielding a Real Madrid enquiry for Trent Alexander-Arnold.

A free transfer target for Los Blancos in summer 2025, the Spanish capital club nonetheless made an attempt to bring forward the signing of the right-back.

With Dani Carvajal out injured long term, and Lucas Vazquez struggling as a makeshift replacement, Real are reported to be desperate to strengthen the position ahead of the second half of the season.

It’s Trent or nothing for Carlo Ancelotti’s side with the 26-year-old the only name in the frame. However, Liverpool declined to negotiate for Trent despite the fact they are on track to lose him for free in just a matter of months.

Alexander-Arnold is entitled to discuss a pre-contract agreement with any potentially interested overseas club as of January 1 and so far Liverpool have had no indication either way where his future lies.

Madrid ready to increase Trent bid

Madrid won’t go away, however, even if the sums discussed for their original bid were laughable. Spanish reports suggested anything from €10 mullion to €25m could be on the table for Trent his January but Liverpool weren’t for turning with prizes to be disputed.

Under a longer contract Liverpool could realistically expect Trent to fetch a world-record sum for a right-back - eclipsing the fees paid for Achraf Hakimi and Joao Cancelo. But a new report suggests that Madrid could up their bid this January should certain conditions be met.

The Athletic claims that Florentino Perez’s club are waiting for an indication that a deal could be possible this January and would raise their offer accordingly.

“If Liverpool were interested in doing a deal now so that one of their biggest stars does not leave for free in June, Madrid would be happy to agree a fair price,” it states.

The report also reiterates that Madrid remain confident of landing Trent on a free regardless at the end of the season.

It has to be said that there are no signs that Liverpool will risk destabilising their season by entertaining a bid for Trent this January.

As things stand they might well lose him for free but that is seen as preferable than losing him halfway through a season in which the Reds are fighting for Premier League and Champions League honours.
