Real Madrid went into January with a plan but they're prepared to abandon it over Liverpool's Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Real Madrid created a bit of a storm on New Year's Eve as news broke of a bid for Trent Alexander-Arnold. Or perhaps it was Liverpool who actually created the storm by making that offer public.

Either way, it's been a shock to the system. Few could possibly believe that Real Madrid would make such an offer unless they were sure Alexander-Arnold was prepared to move to them.

After all, why not wait until the next day to formally ask? We imagine it's because they already knew the answer.

So we'll be honest, it appears that Alexander-Arnold will leave Liverpool at the end of the season. Real Madrid are plainly confident.

So confident, in fact, that they're willing to abandon their plans over the Scouser.

Real Madrid's grand plans

Per El Desmarque, Real Madrid are heading into the January transfer window with a plan. That plan is a dull one, admittedly: no new signings.

They don't want to spend any money this month and won't sign anyone. Unless Alexander-Arnold would move.

He's the one player they would apparently abandon those plans for. We imagine that's because any deal for him would be a cheap one and dramatically increase their chances of retaining the UEFA Champions League.

And that's the sticking point here. Liverpool would need to get more money for Alexander-Arnold than they stand to make in prize money by keeping him. Real Madrid would need to spend less for him than they stand to make in prize money by signing him.

It's almost impossible for both to be true. Still, that won't stop Real Madrid from trying. This almost certainly isn't the last Liverpool have heard of them in January.

So prepare yourself for more twists and turns.
