And that does appear to be Real Madrid. Fabrizio Romano is among those claiming the formal offer sits on Alexander-Arnold's table - he just needs to sign it.

It's a move long rumoured and drawn-out, now we appear to walking into the final days of it. Alexander-Arnold may only be a Liverpool player for the next couple of months.

That will take some getting used to. He was supposed to go on to be the club captain, after all, and a player who gave his peak years to his boyhood club.

Instead, those years are heading to Madrid as with so many others. It hasn't sat right with the vast majority of Liverpool fans and nor should it.

But we should also stress that this one isn't done and Alexander-Arnold has not signed a contract with Real Madrid as of yet. The moment he does, Liverpool must be notified - and that hasn't happened.

A bombshell coming out of Madrid may even threaten the deal. It certainly complicates things.

Carlo Ancelotti's future

The Athletic reports that Carlo Ancelotti is seriously considering his future at Real Madrid. The Brazlian national team want to hire him ahead of the 2026 World Cup and the Italian may fancy the job.

There are two main reasons why. Firstly, he's very aware of Madrid's discussions with Xabi Alonso.

Alonso, a former player at Real Madrid under Ancelotti, has been heavily linked with a move to the Bernabeu. It's thought he's the successor there, certainly, and it just depends on 'when'.

That could be this summer, with Ancelotti also thinking it might be right to leave with his son, Davide. The latter works as an assistant at Real Madrid but will leave at the end of the season.

That opens the door for Ancelotti sr. to follow suit and he may well do that. But it leaves Real Madrid shrouded in uncertainty with Alonso potentially taking over.

For one thing, Alonso typically uses a different formation. He prefers a 3-4-3 system - something Real Madrid aren't necessarily built for.

Moreover, it's not a formation that really suits Alexander-Arnold. The wingbacks in that system are pacey, energetic players and not methodical passers. It's a very, very different role to the one the Scouser knows.

There's also just the fact that Real Madrid have only really 'nailed' two managerial appointments in the last 25 years: Ancelotti and Zinedine Zidane. Everyone else was a short-term success story at best, with Fabio Capello and Jose Mourinho both forced out despite La Liga titles and everyone else struggling quite badly to meet expectations.

It's a warning to Alexander-Arnold, then. This might not be the same Real Madrid side by the time you get there.
