Real Madrid to commit £90m MISTAKE that Liverpool can pounce on

Liverpool might have been relatively quiet in the transfer market over the last few seasons, but that doesn't mean the recruitment team isn't hard at work assessing possible targets.

The signing of Federico Chiesa just before the deadline last summer, for example, is a perfect case study of the Reds' ability to be reactive and 'opportunistic', bringing in a talented player for a low fee.

Of course, fans will be hoping for more substantial incomings, much like the midfield rebuild of 2023, and this summer is set to be extraordinarily busy.

However, while the club will have their list of preferred players, it would be foolish to rule out Richard Hughes jumping on a rival teams' mistakes in an effort to pull off a transfer no one sees coming.

Real Madrid, who are public enemy No. 1 right now after the recent update on Trent Alexander-Arnold's future, might just be about to fall into a trap which could see Liverpool benefit substantially.

Madrid to outlay £90m on transfer mistake

According to an exclusive from the Daily Star, the Spanish giants are admirers of Manchester United's captain Bruno Fernandes, which is quite funny really for two reasons.

Firstly, the Red Devils are at risk of losing their best player, and secondly, because Real Madrid already have one of the most complete midfields in the world, so surely some of their current players would feel marginalised by the move.

The report claims that a representative from Madrid has been in attendance at almost every match that United have played recently, adding that Fernandes is being eyed as a top signing to replace Luka Modric - as the Croatian is out of contract this summer.

It must be said that the £90m figure is not quoted with any evidence, so we'll have to take the Star's word on that, but if the transfer were to go through for such a fee, then the Portuguese international would have high expectations concerning his playing time, which could be problematic.

And this is where Liverpool can interject. Madrid's midfield unit is stacked beyond belief.

Jude Bellingham starts every game, Eduardo Camavinga and Federico Valverde are currently interchanging with Modric in a double-pivot, meanwhile Aurelien Tchouameni, Dani Ceballos, Arda Guler and Brahim Diaz are often left on the bench. The addition of Fernandes would only cause more chaos.

Liverpool have been huge admirers of Tchouameni and Valverde for some time now, and if one of them were to be pushed out, then the Reds could have the opportunity to pounce on a move.

Even though the Reds' midfield is relatively complete already - it outplayed Madrid's when Los Blancos visited Anfield earlier this season - Ryan Gravenberch is need of assistance in defensive midfield and you can never have too many workhorse No. 8s.

As such, the club might not actively be looking to recruit in midfield, but if an opportunity presents itself then watch this space.
