Salah, 32, has been reported to be willing to accept even a one-year extension in order to prolong his stay on Merseyside but there remains too many blockers between what the player wants and what sporting director Richard Hughes is able to offer.
The Egyptian is the club’s highest-paid player - on a reported £350,000 per week - and a renewal won’t come cheap.
Factor in the massive salaries of Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold - also out of contract this year - and Liverpool’s salary costs are going through the roof.
Liverpool’s hesitancy has opened the door to rival suitors with overseas clubs permitted to speak to Salah about a pre-contract agreement since January 1.
'All Saudi clubs want Salah'
Most prominent among the chasing pack have been Saudi Arabian side Al Hilal.
With Jorge Jesus’ side heading for the FIFA Club World Cup in June, they are looking for a high-profile replacement for Neymar, who has re-joined Santos.
Salah is top of the list for Al Hilal and he has also been linked extensively to other Saudi Pro League teams like Al Ittihad in the past.
Salah’s Liverpool future is hanging by a thread and Saudi Sports Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Turki Al-Faisal remains as determined as ever to get him to the Kingdom.
It’s not just Al Hilal in the running, he claimed to Piers Morgan Uncensored, revealing that the league would ‘love’ to have him in the ranks.
"All clubs want Mo Salah,” he said. “All coaches want Mo Salah. He ticks all of the right boxes. We would love to have him.
“He is Egyptian and we have a very good relationship. We feel we are one with the Egyptians because of our history and our culture. So to have Mo Salah would be a pleasure and a privilege.
