Omar Marmoush transfer is a DISASTER for FSG and Liverpool
It looks like Omar Marmoush will soon be announced as a Manchester City player.
This is a great shame because at one stage the 25-year-old looked destined for Liverpool. The Reds’ recruitment team had done their homework on the Egyptian and liked what they saw.

His output for Eintracht Frankfurt across 2024 was consistent and his form during the current season electrifying. Indeed at one stage he looked like the only forward in Europe’s top five leagues who could compete with Liverpool’s own Egyptian King Mohamed Salah.
He’s scored 15 goals and added 10 assists in only 17 Bundesliga games. Marmoush has emerged as a consistent yet versatile attacking threat.
He is finally delivering on the potential which convinced Wolfsburg to sign him from Wadi Degla in Egypt back in 2017.
With the City deal set to be announced, Frankfurt are about to bank an estimated €80 million (£67m) for a striker they signed for free from Wolfsburg not even two years ago.
For the Germans it makes sense to sell now as Marmoush has served them well but clearly has his eyes on bigger and better things. He was only under contract until 2027 and there was little hope for a breakthrough.
From the club’s perspective they will be devastated to lose him but the return on the investment is too good to ignore.
City get the player Liverpool needed
Marmoush therefore WON’T get the opportunity to shine alongside his compatriot Salah at Anfield. And having conducted their research, this could go down as an all-time transfer MISS for the Reds.
City are getting a replacement for Julian Alvarez, a player they have missed more than they might have expected, and Erling Haaland will be getting a new strike partner. Marmoush has dovetailed well alongside a frontman like Hugo Ekitike for Frankfurt this season and is also capable of slotting in down the sides if Pep Guardiola requires it.
But given the issues Liverpool currently have in their attack, sporting director Richard Hughes could regret staying out of this race.
Jota and Nunez to be replaced
The club are fielding enquiries for Darwin Nunez; the £75m they want from Al Hilal would have covered the Marmoush fee and more. Diogo Jota remains a frustratingly injury-prone figure.
Although his goalscoring rate is decent, he simply cannot be relied upon to stay fit. A new forward for Liverpool right now is not a nice-to-have, it’s a necessity.
We may have to wait until summer to get one with Joao Pedro of Brighton among the names linked. But having seen transfer targets line up elsewhere - not to mention Martin Zubimendi being primed for a move to Arsenal - there are no guarantees the Reds will get anywhere with their interest.
Let’s hope this fumble doesn’t cost Liverpool a shot at the title.
