Over the last few years after the arrival of Mohamed Salah and Alisson, Liverpool rarely shopped in the Italian market.
But having grown up in the country and being a native speak of Italian, it was clear Hughes' connection would open up a new platform for Liverpool.
We've already seen that in his first summer with the arrival of Federico Chiesa, someone who would have been unlikely to have been recruited by the previous regime.

Now this summer it seems like Hughes is getting ready to return and he is eyeing up what could be a truly groundbreaking deal.
Why Liverpool are ready to make groundbreaking deal for Nicolo Barella
Right now, one of the biggest stars of Italian football is Nicolo Barella. He turned 28-years-old earlier this year and he's playing very much at the height of his powers.
Barella played a key role in helping Inter Milan beat Bayern Munich in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final tie and take them ever closer to the semi-finals of the competition.
As per Sport Witness, the Gazette dello Sport newspaper wrote a lavish piece praising Barella's quality which also mentioned how Premier League clubs are monitoring his situation and pushing to sign him in the summer.
'Above all' Liverpool were credited with having the biggest interest in the star with the report claiming he would cost more than €100m.
Now, this feels like a pretty incredible deal, Barella is one of the best midfielders in European football. Sure, Liverpool don't necessarily need midfielders at the moment, especially of his profile.
However, if Barella is available, you should always be in the shop window and at least consider a move for him. He's quite literally a groundbreaking midfielder with incredible talent.
He would really suit Arne Slot's style of play and would be the perfect fit to bring in to play that no.10 role for Liverpool.
A player of his ilk could take the Reds up another level, adding creative flair and goals.
