Liverpool find themselves in a precarious situation this winter, with three of the clubs biggest stars’ contracts expiring in less than six months.

As it stands, Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold will all leave Anfield for free at the close of the season – a truly dismal prospect.

Real Madrid are reportedly the leading suitors for Alexander-Arnold and recent reports suggest that Salah and Van Dijk could be reunited as teammates next season, with Al-Hilal leading the race for the pair.

Talks of a Mo Salah transfer to the Saudi Pro League have been going on for some time, but it has now been revealed when Al-Hilal started their mission to recruit the Egyptian King.

Salah is a long-term target of the Saudi Pro League champions

It is well known that Al-Ittihad saw a bid rejected for Salah in 2023, but a new report from Ahmad Al-Ajlan to MBC has revealed that Al-Hilal were actually the first Saudi side to try and negotiate with Salah.

The report discussed the ongoing negotiations between the reigning Saudi Pro League champions and Salah’s representatives, and things seem to be moving along well for Al-Hilal.

“[Salah] is requesting a huge amount of money that the club will reject,” Al-Ajlan states. "However, negotiations have been positive so far, and the player has informed Al-Hilal that he doesn't mind joining the club if Liverpool do not make a contract renewal offer.”

Things are not settled yet and Al-Ajlan pointed out that if Liverpool were to meet Salah’s demands he could remain in Merseyside beyond the end of this campaign.

Al-Ajlan also exclusively revealed that Al-Hilal made their initial approach two summers ago to Salah two summers ago, so their interest stems a long time.

Back then Salah shared an openness to move to Saudi Arabia but clearly felt that the time was not yet right.

The future of Mohamed Salah

Although negotiations are still ongoing to try and reach an agreement to keep Salah at Anfield for longer, Al-Hilal are pushing hard to be able to include the Egyptian in their FIFA Club World Cup squad in June.

The competition begins more than two weeks before Salah’s Liverpool contract expires and therefore some agreement would have to be reached between the Reds and Al-Hilal for this to happen.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding his future Salah is enjoying one of the best seasons of his career, with 31 goals and assists in his opening 21 Premier League matches and the Egyptian has played a vital role in getting Liverpool to top of the table.

Regardless of what happens with Salah’s future, Liverpool supporters will hope he can continue his fine form and that the Premier League trophy returns to Anfield in May.
