Liverpool will soon require a replacement for Mohamed Salah as their attacking talisman.

The 32-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season and if no agreement is reached over a new deal then he will be on his way.

However, even if Salah stays, he is not getting any younger and his strong form won’t carry on forever. It means FSG and sporting director Richard Hughes need to identify a candidate capable of taking up Salah’s herculean attacking burden.
This seas alone he’s got an incredible 23 goals and 17 assists in just 32 matches, demonstrating the kind of form that could have him described as the best in the world.
Succeeding Salah as the team’s go-to player up front is not going to be an easy task but among the current crop of Liverpool stars there could be one emerging possibility.
Although he plays on the other side, Cody Gakpo is showing that he can be trusted to lead the line under Arne Slot and is set to hit the best numbers of his Anfield career so far.
Gakpo emerges from the pack
Nominated for the Premier League’s January Player of the Month award, the Dutchman has already scored 15 goals - and added five assists - across his 33 matches this term.
He only needs one more goal to better last season’s tally - and he will have done it around 20 matches sooner this campaign. While those aren’t quite Salah numbers, Gakpo is no doubt growing in importance and influence in the Liverpool attack.
The 25-year-old needed careful handling after looking like a transfer bust under Jurgen Klopp. The German willingly admitted that he made mistakes with Gakpo having signed him for an initial £37m from PSV back in 2022 and he never really allowed him to flourish in his best position.
Gakpo started only twice for Klopp at left-wing in his final season with Luis Diaz the preferred option. Slot allowed the pair to duke it out for the starting shirt this season and - despite a strong start - Diaz has more or less had to admit defeat.
A renaissance that began at Euro 2024 for the Netherlands has carried on into the Premier League and Champions League seasons for the former PSV captain.
He has scored important goals in big Liverpool fixtures this season - including strikes against Real Madrid, Manchester City and Manchester United.
Sooner or later Liverpool will lose Salah and Gakpo is finally showing that he can be the senior partner in the Reds’ attacking trident. Gakpo has emerged from the pack to become Liverpool’s second-most important forward.
