The problem is that he's now turning 33. Liverpool don't want to pay Salah an enormous amount of money only for a proper decline to kick in and leave them stranded.

It will happen at some point after all, and the data suggests it's right around the corner for players over 30. There's no guarantee when it will happen but the fact that it could is enough to worry Liverpool.

For one thing, just look at Sadio Mane. The winger was one of the world's best at Liverpool in 2022. Then he moved to Bayern Munich that summer and was half the player.

Now he's not actually good enough for the Saudi Pro League, such has been his decline. It's quite incredible for a player who is the same age as Salah.

But let's be honest - the 'Salah could leave' talk has been going on for far too long. It's not even just this season, as there was talk of an exit at the start of last season with Saudi interest and record-breaking bids.

And the summer before that as Liverpool again dealt with his expiring contract. There was even a hint of an exit between those two periods when a shock meeting with Paris Saint-Germain happened.

Why Mo Salah met PSG

Salah was pictured meeting with PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi back in January 2023. It was a shock to the system, given the Parisians have wanted to sign the Liverpool star for a very long time now.

The Reds were halfway through a disappointing campaign that would necessitate a summer rebuild. This appeared to be Salah testing the waters for a potential exit.

But two years on, Le Parisien claims Salah was never actually looking to leave Liverpool. Instead, this was 'only a courtesy meeting between two of the most important personalities in the Middle East'.

They're certainly that. So much so that Al-Khelaifi has long wanted the face of Arabic football to join the Qatari-owned PSG.

This, though, wasn't an attempt to make this happen and that it was a meeting between two people out of respect. The article makes it perfectly clear that Salah has essentially never wavered from his commitment to Liverpool - only the Saudi mega-offer turned his head a bit.

And that's why PSG have never been able to land Salah. They now know they almost certainly never will, unless something shocking happens this year.
