Liverpool have spent a lot of time negotiating with Mo Salah over a new contract. Now they've got confirmation that they waited too long.

Liverpool are on track to lose Mo Salah at the end of the season. That's been the case since last season ended, of course, but it's becoming more and more of a reality.

After all, there are only a few more months to run here. Salah is actually able to negotiate with clubs outside of England, too, and agree to a pre-contract with them.

Thus far, that hasn't happened and Liverpool remain in pole position to re-sign Salah. But they lost their exclusive negotiation rights once the new year ticked over.

2024 was the time when Liverpool should have sorted their situation with Salah (and Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold, for that matter) but they didn't. Letting things get this far opened the door to a rival bidder and if reports are to be believed, that's exactly what has happened.

Liverpool will almost certainly regret their inability to sort this out.

Mo Salah contract competition

There should be zero question that Liverpool do want to sign Salah to a new contract. Of course they do.

They're just unsure about paying the amount that Salah wants in order to get that done. He's too old for a massive deal, in their eyes, and they weren't certain about the 2022 contract in the first place.

The Reds want to talk him down, getting Salah to agree for less money from the club. That could be with a short-term deal or it could be with a significantly reduced wage.

Either way, that becomes a lot harder to do when there's serious competition. L'Equipe journalist Loic Tanzi now reports that Paris Saint-Germain have decided to 'do everything' they can in order to sign Salah.

This comes after a series of claims that PSG wouldn't be chasing the Egyptian. It appears they've had a change of heart and will instead do all they can do land him.

We imagine that's because they feel even one year of Salah gives them a great chance of finally winning the UEFA Champions League. They're probably right, too, after signing Kvicha Kvaratskhelia from Napoli.

But this is the nightmare situation for Liverpool. PSG carry serious cash and can essentially eliminate any chance of Salah taking a major pay cut this year.

If the Reds want to keep their star, they'll need to pay up. PSG's determination confirms that.
