New Mo Salah MEGA offer shows FSG are serious

Liverpool have entered 2025 in a very awkward way.

Fans are dreaming about the Premier League title and - perhaps - a Champions League to go along with it.

Arne Slot has guided his club to the top of the pile and has got them looking every inch like title winners in waiting.

But something alarming is taking place off the field. Fenway Sports Group have allowed the contracts of arguably their three most important players to lapse.

Liverpool could lose Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah for nothing at the end of the season when their terms expire.

There has been plenty of talk that sporting director Richard Hughes inherited this contract mess from his predecessors. And it’s true, with Jurgen Klopp leaving along with previous incumbent Jorg Schmadtke some vital time was lost in approaching those three players. The failure to re-sign them stretches a long way back.

However it was described as Hughes’ priority in the summer transfer window - and heading into this one - to sort out new deals.

Salah: 'More out than in'

It looks like a deal with Van Dijk might be close with the Dutchman’s future said to reside on Merseyside. Trent’s head may be already in Madrid; no matter what Liverpool offer it might not be enough.

But Salah is the one causing most alarm.

He is the best player in the world on current form and if Liverpool hold their nerve he looks a dead cert to win the Ballon d’Or. His numbers hardly need repeating but for the record he’s scored 20 and assisted 17 in 26 matches this term. The Egyptian is once again carrying the creative and goalscoring burden for the Reds.

That is why his words throughout the season have been so concerning.

“We are almost in December and I haven’t received any offers yet to stay in the club. I’m probably more out than in,” Salah said after the win against Southampton in November.

That suggested Hughes had effectively frittered away the first months of his tenure without making a suitable offer to Salah.

That lack of agreement led Liverpool to a position where they were vulnerable to other teams offering contracts to their players once 2025 got underway. And, according to reports out of France, that is exactly what has transpired.

Have FSG got the message?

It’s been claimed that Paris Saint-Germain have sent a proposal Salah’s way following on from reports a couple of months ago that talks had begun between the club and Salah’s camp.

A three-year, €500,000 per week offer is reportedly on the table from the Ligue 1 giants. That is sure to be alluring to Salah if he’s got money on his mind.

But as proven by Lionel Messi and Sergio Ramos, PSG is maybe not the best place for superstars of a certain age to continue their careers. If Salah was transfixed by salary alone he would have probably have taken up offers in Saudi Arabia by now.

But it’s clear he wants MORE than money. He wants prizes, collectively and records, individually. That’s why reports of Salah’s willingness to compromise - even a one-year deal would be enough - should be so encouraging to Liverpool fans.

He wants to stay.

And now, it would seem that FSG have got the message. An organisation which prioritises analytics, stats and data has got certain processes in place before making financial commitments. Big deals and big contracts are simply not doled out.

That’s why the likes of Steven Gerrard and Roberto Firmino have found themselves looking elsewhere for a deal at the end of their contracts. And, in fairness, it’s a gamble that FSG have very rarely got wrong when letting go of their ageing big earners.

But Salah is different.

He may be 32, and will turn 33 in summer, but there isn’t a player on the planet that can touch him. He is still in his peak and looks set to dominate world football for the next few years to come with few striking rivals capable of matching his output.

It would cost FSG a lot more to replace him than to re-sign him.

Salah is the outlier

And there are finally indications that the club are prepared to rip up the rule book in order to keep Salah on.

Several outlets have reported that contract offers have been sent to Salah, albeit at a late stage. And the French report has revealed details of those terms. Salah has been offered a two-year deal at €400,000 per week.

A straight-up, two-year extension on Salah’s current wages - reported to be £350,000 per week in English money.

That is a huge outlay considering Salah is already comfortably outearning every other Liverpool player and that he will be 35 or thereabouts by the time the contract ends.

But it is testament to the fact that FSG maybe do see Salah as an outlier, a player who defies their statistical models. He is a player you truly have to see to believe.

Picture this: In two-and-a-half years time, Salah leaves Liverpool as the all-time Premier League top goalscorer and he’s even got an outside shot at being the club’s all-time top goalscorer too.

With Slot at the helm he’s got the chance to plunder even more top club honours, with the major ones at a premium since 2020.

That alternative would be Salah departing at the end of the current campaign and taking the field for a soulless entity like PSG.

His financial future has long been secure. It’s time for legacy. And finally FSG seem to be seeing it that way too.
