Al-Hilal have got their eyes on several Liverpool players all at once.

It’s no secret that the Saudi Arabia giants are interested in adding Mohamed Salah to their roster ahead of the FIFA Club World Cup in June 2025.

Salah, 32, has not yet signed a new Liverpool contract with the club now vulnerable to free transfer bids from other clubs.

News reverberated last week that Al-Hilal were also seeking a deal for Virgil van Dijk - despite the Liverpool captain’s future at Anfield looking reasonably secure before Christmas.

And Jorge Jesus - the Al-Hilal head coach - would also like to link up with Darwin Nunez, who he coached at Benfica. Al-Hilal had their opening offer of £70 million rejected by Liverpool but the Premier League side could do business at £75m for the Uruguayan.

One complicating factor for the winter transfer period was a lack of available foreign player slots to accommodate a superstar overseas signing. Al-Hilal would have to de-list one of their foreigners with space only for an under-21 or younger overseas signing during the current window.

That despite the fact that Neymar has ALREADY been de-registered by Al-Hilal for their Saudi Pro League programme. The 32-year-old has been a huge transfer flop in the Middle East, playing only THREE SPL matches since signing in the summer of 2023.

He suffered a catastrophic knee injury shortly after arriving and was hit with a hamstring injury not long after his comeback.

Neymar returning to Santos

Neymar is banking an estimated €150m per year at Al-Hilal but it looks like the adventure is now over. The Brazilian is set to return to Santos, where he originally made his name as a teenager before moving to Europe with Barcelona.

An MLS move alongside Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez at Inter Miami was mooted - as was a lucrative transfer to Chicago Fire - but it now appears as though Neymar is heading home.

Neymar out, Salah in?

"Neymar, ready to return to Santos,” wrote transfer journalist Cesar Luis Merlo on X, formerly Twitter. “The club where he made his debut already has an agreement with the 32-year-old footballer.

“The termination of Al Hilal is being worked on and the idea is to announce it once the tournament that marked Peixe's return to the top flight is over.”

Santos will play in the Brazilian Serie A (first division) next season having bounced back from relegation to Serie B.

And once Neymar goes, it could well open the door to Salah arriving.

It’s been spoken about for a long time that the Egyptian King would inherit Neymar’s No10 shirt - as well as his salary - with the Riyadh giants.

The club would like to sort a deal out before the Club World Cup and it now appears Salah’s future is in even more doubt.
