It isn’t often that Liverpool are in the hunt for a player’s signature without competition, and the status quo will continue this summer.

As the Reds approach a potentially era defining transfer window, the majority of their reported targets are also in the sights of other top clubs – including some of Liverpool’s biggest rivals.

The good news is that Liverpool’s greatest rival have reportedly pulled out of the race for one of the Reds’ top targets.

Manchester United out of the race for top Liverpool target

A number of positions are set to be addressed following the conclusion of the campaign, and one of the most pressing problems currently facing Arne Slot’s squad is recruiting a left-back.

Doubts have emerged this season over the longevity of Andy Robertson, who has been first-choice at Anfield for almost a decade.

Kostas Tsimikas is the current alternative, but a new left-back appears to be a priority for Richard Hughes in his third transfer window in charge of Liverpool.

The Reds top target for the spot appears to be Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez. The club actually opened discussions for the Hungarian before Christmas, as was exclusively revealed by Anfield Watch.

Now Fabrizio Romano, speaking to Caught Offside, has confirmed that Manchester United are out of the race for the 21-year-old despite being long-term admirers.

“With Kerkez, Liverpool already months ago showed an interest,” Romano told Caught Offside. “Man United were also keen but then they invested in Patrick Dorgu so they are no longer looking for a player in that position.”

Liverpool’s clear run at Milos Kerkez

The news that Manchester United won’t be trying to tempt one of the club’s top targets to Old Trafford will be music to the ears of Hughes, who has already signed the Hungarian once before in his career.

Bournemouth are reportedly demanding a fee of around £45 million for Kerkez, but Liverpool are fortunate to be in a healthy financial position and that spend shouldn’t be too difficult to sanction for Hughes.

Kerkez has enjoyed a breakthrough season with the Cherries, announcing himself to the world as one of Europe’s most exciting fullbacks.

Manchester United’s withdrawal doesn’t guarantee Kerkez ends up at Anfield, but it certainly makes the path to a deal much clearer, and it could only be a matter of time before the defender is once again signed by Richard Hughes.
