Liverpool Transfer News: Michael Edwards makes £100m attacker a summer priority
Liverpool are 'expected' to move for Jamal Musiala this summer, with Michael Edwards prioritising a transfer for the Bayern Munich star according to one report.
It has been confirmed that Edwards, Liverpool's popular former sporting director, has struck a deal to return to the club in a new capacity as FSG's CEO of Football after a two-year absence.
The 44-year-old is widely credited with playing a major role in the building of the team that achieved Champions League and Premier League success, and is regarded for his ability to identify talent and strike deals.
Now set to operate in an over-arching leadership role that will also encompass an as yet to be confirmed second club in FSG's portfolio, Edwards is expected to appoint Richard Hughes as the Reds' new sporting director, while the two will oversee the recruitment, squad planning and philosophy in the post Jurgen Klopp era.
According to one report, Edwards — who was in attendance at Old Trafford for Liverpool's FA Cup defeat to Manchester United on Sunday — has already identified a top summer target in Musiala.
Football Insider reports that the 21-year-old is 'expected to be one of his [Edwards'] first priorities' at Liverpool as the club makes summer transfer window preparations without Klopp for the first time since 2015.
While Liverpool are 'very keen' on Musiala, Bayern Munich are not interested in seeing the attacking midfielder leave and will supposedly ask for £100m to deter any sale from happening.
Contract drama
Though Bayern are intent on keeping the former Chelsea youth team star on their books, Musiala's contract situation may force their hand, with his current deal two years from expiry this summer. It has also previously been reported that the Germany international has so far turned down the contract extension offers put to him by the Bundesliga giants.
Manchester City have also been regularly linked with the star, while the Daily Mail recently revealed that Chelsea will receive 20% of any transfer fee should Bayern choose to sell.
Musiala, who was born in Stuttgart, spent much of his childhood in the United Kingdom and has a British-Nigerian father. He represented England at youth levels up to Under-21 before switching allegiance to Germany and has made 25 caps since his senior team debut in 2021.
This season, he has scored 12 goals and provided six assists for Bayern in all competitions this season and will come up against Arsenal in the Champions League quarter finals next month.
