Liverpool look set to miss out on Hoffenheim wonderkid Maximilian Beier as Borussia Dortmund are close to landing his signature.

The 21-year-old has been on Liverpool’s radar for some time and the links have not disappeared this summer.

Despite Liverpool’s interest in the German international, Beier has made the decision to join BVB this summer according to Florian Plettenberg.

Beier scored an impressive 16 goals in 33 league games for Hoffenheim last season and has attracted interest from a number of top clubs this window.

More about Beier

Beier was selected to represent the German national team at the Euros this summer, although the youngster only managed one appearance off the bench.

Known for his tricky footwork and his threat in front of goal it's clear to see why Liverpool were interested in Beier as they look to add reinforcements to Arne Slot’s front line ahead of his inaugural season as Liverpool boss.

Beier mainly plays through the middle but is able to deputise on either wing and has done so multiple times. This kind of versatility is something Liverpool look for in attackers, with almost all of their attacking options able to rotate across the front line.

Have Liverpool missed out?

Plettenberg reported that Liverpool had never lost focus on Beier despite the ongoing attempt to sign Martín Zubimendi and that talks had been held between Hoffenheim and Liverpool as recently as a few days ago.

It has been widely reported that Liverpool are in the market for at least one and maybe two new attackers, and very heavy links have been made to Newcastle’s Anthony Gordon, but it does seem that Liverpool’s preference is on wide forwards and this isn’t where Beier is most natural on the football pitch.

Slot has confirmed his belief that Darwin Núñez’s best position is as an out-and-out centre forward and its likely that, even if Beier had opted to join the Reds, Núñez would remain the first-choice no.9 for Liverpool.

As well as this, BVB recently sold key forward Niclas Füllkrug to West Ham so there will be minutes up for grabs in Dortmund.

Although there was definitely interest from Liverpool, Beier seems to have chosen to remain in his homeland to try and make the no.9 spot his own at BVB, and Liverpool must now move on to other attacking targets.
