Liverpool may have just been handed a significant blow in the pursuit of a key summer target.

An overhaul is coming this summer and, as exclusively revealed by Anfield Watch, several big names could be replaced at Anfield.

The scope of the rebuild needed at Liverpool isn’t yet known, and a lot will hinge on whether Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold extend their contracts, which are all due to expire at the end of June.
Some exciting names have been linked with moves to Merseyside, including Alexander Isak and Joao Pedro, but it now appears that the Reds could fall behind in the race for one of the Premier League’s most sought-after stars.
Arsenal to gain advantage in the race for Matheus Cunha
Wolves’ Matheus Cunha has been in great form this season, with 19 goals and assists in 29 appearances so far, and unsurprisingly Liverpool have been touted to move for the 25-year-old Brazilian.
The Reds aren’t the only club reportedly pursuing the forward however, and title rivals Arsenal may be about to gain a huge advantage in the race for his signature.
Fabrizio Romano has revealed on X, formerly Twitter, that Andrea Berta is now the top candidate to replace Edu as Arsenal’s sporting director – with talks at an advanced stage.
This is significant in the battle for Cunha’s signature because Berta is the former sporting director of Atletico Madrid, and he signed Cunha for the Spanish side back in 2021.
Wolves signed Cunha from Atletico on loan initially, before making the transfer permanent in the summer of 2023.

Where will Cunha end up?
If Arsenal do appoint Berta, he could give them the upper hand in the race for Cunha, and Liverpool’s Richard Hughes will be left with a lot of work to do.
Cunha - who is valued at up to €65 million by Football Transfers - has been linked with the Reds multiple times throughout the season, but he isn’t the only player that Liverpool are reportedly chasing.
Arsenal seem to be the main competitors for almost every striker Liverpool are linked with, but if they do sign Cunha the door could be left open for Hughes to make a move for an alternative target.

Berta’s appointment won’t guarantee that Cunha makes the switch to North London, but it could prove to be a blow to Liverpool and will make the Reds’ summer business even more complicated.
