Martin Zubimendi is reportedly causing real problems for Real Sociedad just days after he rejected a move to Liverpool.

The Times claims that Real Sociedad have a problem on their hands after convincing Martin Zubimendi to reject Liverpool and remain with his boyhood club. The Basque side did all they could to keep their midfielder - a process that eventually worked.

But a part of that process was promising Zubimendi that he'd be the highest-earning player at the club with a brand new contract. They're now in talks with him over that contract and things aren't going to plan.

The report claims those talks are proving 'problematic', and that's 'presumably' because the player is playing hardball. Much, as it should be said, like Sociedad did with Liverpool.

They refused to negotiate with the Reds, instead pointing to Zubimendi's release clause and insisting it be paid in full. Now that he's staying he wants that new contract - and will naturally expect the same level of desire for him to stay long-term.

Zubimendi causes Sociedad problems

It's an interesting one, because if these talks continue to be problematic, Zubimendi could end up with yet another change of heart. We just wonder if Liverpool could bide their time here and see what happens closer to the transfer deadline.

After all, it's said in the same Times article that the Reds will not pursue another midfielder. Zubimendi is the one they want, believing him to be of the perfect profile to improve the squad under Arne Slot.

There is no alternative and Liverpool would instead stick with what they've got. But if Zubimendi were to grow increasingly frustrated with these contract talks, maybe things could swerve yet again.

That's probably very hopeful, though Zubimendi has already changed his mind twice in the last month. What's one more?
