Liverpool apparently believe a fantastic deal is on the cards this summer. They're looking to repeat the Virgil van Dijk trick.

Liverpool opted against any signings in the January transfer window, instead handing Arne Slot the same squad for the remainder of the season.

It's a bit of a controversial one, given the great uncertainty over various areas of the squad. Few could say they're happy with the situation up top, for instance.

Liverpool lack a reliable goalscorer to play through the middle. Darwin Nunez is as unreliable as it gets in front of goal, while Diogo Jota just can't stay fit.

But that's just the here and now. The fact that Liverpool's best players essentially all face uncertain futures thanks to various contract situations means an overhaul is possibly necessary over the entire pitch.

One area is at centre-back, with Virgil van Dijk yet to sign a new contract. There are doubts over Ibrahima Konate's future, too, while neither Joe Gomez nor Jarell Quansah have locked down places this season.

It's a situation that has Liverpool looking at a potential major signing.

Liverpool and Marc Guehi

Football Insider reports that Liverpool are in the race for Marc Guehi. The centre-back is expected to leave Crystal Palace in the summer as he enters the final year of his contract.

Both Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur tried to get ahead of that situation. They've both made massive offers in the last six months to pry Guehi away from Palace but saw their offers rejected.

Spurs put £70m on the table just last week, in fact. It's now believed that any deal for Guehi this summer would be for a dramatically reduced fee from that figure - and Liverpool are among those willing to pay it.

It would be a somewhat similar deal to the one that clinched Virgil van Dijk in 2018. A Premier League centre-back and captain, looking to make the step up to European football.

While no one should expect Guehi to ever reach the heights of Van Dijk, it would see Liverpool return to a style of transfer that brought them incredible rewards.

It remains to be seen what the actual price for Guehi would be. Liverpool, though, won't find many better options to fix their defence.
