One of Liverpool’s rivals for Marc Guehi has turned to new targets. The Reds could have a clear run here.

The Athletic reports that Newcastle United have stepped up their interest in alternative targets after struggling to strike a deal with Crystal Palace for Marc Guehi.

Newcastle have tried with several bids to sign the England defender but Palace have rejected them all. The Eagles want £70m all-in for the player, while Newcastle can't go above £65m.

And so they're now talking with other clubs. One of those is Bayer Leverkusen, with Newcastle hoping to get their hands on Edmond Tapsoba. Chelsea's Axel Disasi is another who interests those on Tyneside.

Of course, this could all simply be to put pressure on Palace to sell but as we learned yesterday, they're not the only ones considering a move for Guehi.

Liverpool also like the player and with both Joe Gomez and Sepp van den Berg potentially moving on, there could be space for Guehi at Anfield. News that Newcastle could be moving on would be welcome there, then, as it suggests that the Reds could have a free run at the 24-year-old.

If they're willing to meet the asking price, that is.

Liverpool could move for Guehi

Anfield Watch exclusively revealed that Gomez could leave this summer and rumours really started to fly this weekend after he was left out of the Liverpool squad to face Ipswich Town.

Now, we only think a move for Guehi makes any sense if Gomez leaves. If he does leave, though, then this one could really have legs.

Guehi would bring a lot to the squad, as well as fitting in nicely as a Virgil van Dijk successor. Any Gomez sale would offset the £70m cost, too, and it seems pretty certain that Palace would sell for that.

We'll see what the new week or so holds, but if Liverpool want Guehi, they have a path to get him.
