Liverpool in pole-position after target TURNS DOWN PL rival - Anfield Watch

One of the names linked with Liverpool this summer has seen a transfer saga finally come to an end - and the Reds could now benefit.

It’s no secret that Liverpool have been chasing players in certain positions more than others, with the defensive midfield chase well-publicised even before Martin Zubimendi turned down the chance to move to Anfield.

Whilst the popular belief is that the whole weight of the Reds’ transfer hierarchy is trying to find the next best no.6 that can fit seamlessly into Arne Slot’s squad, there is also a steadfast appetite to see reinforcement in the centre of defence as well.

Having been linked with a wealth of young defensive talent all summer long, Liverpool might now be in the perfect place to acquire one of these reported targets for less than his current market value.

With the summer transfer deadline passing by yesterday, that meant that one of the summer’s longest transfer sagas came to an end.

Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi was hotly tipped to move to Newcastle United this summer for what would’ve been a club record combined £70m, Palace remained steadfast in sticking to their £75m asking price for a player who was one of England’s standouts at Euro 2024.

According to a report in the Mirror, Liverpool had planned to more seriously consider a move for Guehi if he remained at Palace beyond this summer, which he obviously has. Next summer Guehi will have just one year left on his current contract, which should bring down Palace’s asking price should he not renew in South London.

This means that Liverpool’s patience for which they have been quite understandably criticised might well pay off if they can target Guehi for a reduced price next summer, as is claimed.
