Liverpool Transfer News: Reds to battle Man Utd for €60m Bundesliga goalscorer
Liverpool and Manchester United are set to do battle in the summer transfer market for Borussia Dortmund striker Donyell Malen, according to a report in Germany.
The 25-year-old has scored 11 goals in 22 Bundesliga matches for the Yellow and Blacks this season, his most prolific campaign to date since joining from PSV in 2021.
The Dutch international has also been linked with a move to Arsenal this summer, the club with whom he played as a youth team star from 2015 to 2017.
The Gunners declined to add a centre forward in the winter window but it’s been well documented that they will move for a striker this summer with Viktor Gyokeres, Ivan Toney and Victor Osimhen also linked.
Liverpool are set for a reset in the post-Jurgen Klopp era with Richard Hughes to be announced as new sporting director, working under FSG Head of Football Michael Edwards.
Liverpool and Man Utd both need new forwards
The Reds are in the market for a new manager with their German legend departing at the end of the season but plans continue to be made for the transfer market.
The 2019 European champions have been forced to use youngsters like Jayden Danns and Lewis Koumas as injuries bite in their forward line, with Mohamed Salah, Darwin Nunez and Diogo Jota all missing action at one stage or another in 2024.
United’s interest in Malen has been previously reported, with the club said to be keen on keeping any deals for the Dutchman and Jadon Sancho separate.
Sancho, 23, moved on loan to Signal-Iduna Park in January with his former employers keen to make the deal permanent at the end of the season.
However in order to book the best possible value for their £85 million man, United will not entertain a part exchange.
That doesn’t rule out a move for Malen but the deals will be kept apart. The Red Devils are in need of attacking reinforcements with Rasmus Hojlund often their only option up top this term.
Bild reports that Liverpool’s interest in Malen stretches back multiple transfer windows but Dortmund still retain some hope of keeping him.
He is out of contract in 2026 and if they fail to agree new terms then the club could well be forced to cash out while his value remains high.
It’s expected that a fee of €60 million could be enough for interested parties to prise Malen out of Dortmund.
