Liverpool have officially announced the signing of Giorgi Mamardashvili for a reported fee of €35 million from Valencia , where he will remain for the rest of the season.

Liverpool’s interest in Mamardahvili dates back to the start of the window and the negotiations over his price and potential loan destination have not been easy.

For a while it looked as though he would join Premier League club Bournemouth on loan for the season if Liverpool completed his signing but that is no longer the plan, and Mamardashvili will remain in Valencia before joining the Reds next summer.

Who is Mamardashvili?

The six-foot-five ‘keeper has made over 100 appearances for Valencia over the last three seasons and has earned 21 caps for the Georgian national team. He played every minute of Georgia’s campaign at the Euros and kept a clean sheet against a Portugal team containing Cristiano Ronaldo and Diogo Jota.

Newcastle United and Chelsea were both linked with Mamardashvili but Liverpool have beaten their Premier League rivals to his signature.

The ‘keeper has played in both of Valencia’s league games so far this season and is the club’s established no.1.

Liverpool’s goalkeeping department

Goalkeeper is potentially Liverpool's strongest position depth wise, with Alisson Becker holding the no.1 spot whilst highly rated Caoimhin Kelleher is ready to fill in for the Brazilian when needed.

Although the goalkeeping situation at Liverpool at this moment in time is sound, it gets a lot more complicated when looking to the future.

Kelleher has been constantly linked with a move away this summer and Alisson recently confirmed that he had been the subject of interest from Saudia Arabian clubs. On top of that the 31-year-old has only two seasons remaining on his contract and could force a move out of the club next summer if Liverpool don’t want to lose him for free.

Alisson has however refused to rule out signing a new contract with the Reds and has also given his seal of approval to the signing of Mamardashvili.

It is unclear whether the Georgian has been signed as a replacement for Kelleher or as a long-term replacement for Alisson but what is clear is that Mamardashvili will add to an already strong goalkeeping department at Anfield.
