Throughout both the summer and winter transfer windows, Liverpool have been assessing different options for each of their positions in need, be it Milos Kerkez or Antonee Robinson at full-back or Murillo and Marc Guehi at centre-back.

So far, no moves have been formally made and it seems as though the club is biding its time, but according to fresh reports one other potential target has already decided to move elsewhere and Liverpool have been left in the dust.

Lloyd Kelly moves to Juventus

According to Fabrizio Romano, the 26-year-old has a verbal agreement in place to leave Newcastle in favour of a permanent move to Turin.

Last season, already aware of the squad repairs they needed to do, Liverpool were linked with a move for Kelly and 'advanced discussions' were reportedly taking place as he was unhappy at Bournemouth.

As such, while the Reds were eyeing up a move for the Cherries' sporting director Richard Hughes, they were also hoping to bring a player along with him.

And Kelly would have been a perfect fit at Liverpool, capable of covering Van Dijk as the team's left centre-back, while also having experience in moving over to the flanks and playing as a left-back.

He was one of a number of options the club was considering, but in the end, the move just wasn't meant to be.

Kelly would instead transfer to Newcastle in the summer and it looked incredibly likely that Liverpool had blown their opportunity. He signed a five-year deal with the Magpies and so the club would inevitably have to take their interest elsewhere.

However, six months into his stay in Tyneside, he has been unable to break through into the first team, starting just four games for the club and it looked for all the world like he could move elsewhere straightaway.

And that he did, except this time, it was Juventus who beat the Reds to the transfer.

Swapping one black and white shirt for another one, Kelly might finally be able to play regular first-team football, but Liverpool have only themselves to blame for not making a move happen.

Richard Hughes signed him for Bournemouth back in 2019, so a relationship was already been there to take advantage of, and Liverpool are still in need a player of his profile.

For the time being, the Reds will be forced into making use of the personnel they have at hand in their squad, but the need for some transfer activity in the defensive department is clear, and unless a more cut-throat approach is taken up, the club will continue to see their targets move elsewhere.
