Arne Slot’s first two transfer windows as Liverpool head coach have been rather lacklustre.

The only addition to the Dutchman’s senior squad so far has been Federico Cheisa, who arrived in a cut-price deal at the end of the summer.

A deal was also announced for goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, who will join the Reds next summer from Valencia.

No other transfer business has been concluded by Richard Hughes and Michael Edwards since Slot’s arrival, despite a great deal of speculation around a number of targets.

Now, one man who was linked with a switch to Anfield in the summer is tearing it up at his new club, and Liverpool may be regretting not bringing him in.

Liverpool missed out on Julian Alvarez

The former Manchester City forward was on the Reds’ radar last summer before his switch to Atletico Madrid, and Liverpool were even the bookies’ second favourites to sign him according to the Liverpool ECHO.

Despite the links at the time a move never materialised for the Argentine, who has 25 goals and assists for Atletico Madrid this campaign including two goal involvements in Atletico's recent 4-4 draw with Barcelona in the Copa del Rey.

Bar Mohamed Salah, Liverpool’s attack has struggled for consistency this season and Alvarez could have been an ideal solution.

Slot’s side already have one hand on the Premier League title, but if they had the 25-year-old World Cup winner up front they could have been in an even better position.

Would Alvarez have been a good fit at Liverpool?

Before he made the switch to Madrid, Alvarez played for one of the Reds’ direct rivals, Manchester City, so a deal may have been complicated but the player has spoken very fondly about Liverpool's captain Virgil van Dijk since his move - so it might not have been completely impossible.

Nevertheless, it’s hard to argue that the Premier League winner wouldn’t have been an upgrade on Liverpool’s current options at centre-forward.

Darwin Nunez has repeatedly failed to meet expectations this season, and Diogo Jota has been almost continuously injured. This is why both are likely to leave Anfield at the end of the season, as exclusively revealed by Anfield Watch.

Alvarez has more goals this season than anyone other than Salah has for Liverpool. In fact, the Egyptian King is the only Red to have broken double digits. The Atletico Madrid man also has more assists than anyone bar Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold in the Liverpool squad.

Alvarez could have been a game-changing signing for Liverpool, but it clearly wasn’t to be and Arne Slot’s side are managing okay without him. Even so, it is interesting to think would could have been if it was Alvarez leading the line at Anfield this season.
