Liverpool fans were ecstatic when the club signed Fernando Torres back in 2007. The Atletico Madrid captain had reached legendary status at his hometown club and expectations where high when Rafael Benitez managed to get his signature.

Torres used to play for Atletico with the lyrics to You’ll Never Walk Alone etched inside his captain’s armband and joining Liverpool was a match made in heaven.

His time at Anfield coincided with a barren spell, trophy-wise, but Torres captured the hearts of the Kop and carried off a host of individual honours.

Liverpool's striker overhaul

The striker won the club’s Player of the Season award in 2008 - the same year he finished third on the Ballon d’Or podium. He was also a two-time nominee to the PFA Premier League team of the year as well as the FIFPro World XI.

Torres spoiled his reputation by transferring to Chelsea in January 2011 but in hindsight his spell at Liverpool is remembered with fondness. And now Liverpool have a unique opportunity to repeat their Torres trick.

Anfield Watch broke the news on Friday that Liverpool attempted to sign Atletico Madrid’s Julian Alvarez last summer when he was leaving Manchester City. And we also revealed that the Reds were eyeing up the World Cup winner for a summer 2025 transfer.

Liverpool’s strike line is looking uncertain for next season with question marks over Diogo Jota, Darwin Nunez, Luis Diaz, Federico Chiesa and of course Mohamed Salah.

Alvarez back on Liverpool radar

There is a chance for Arne Slot to mould the squad in the way that he wants, beginning with an overhaul of the forward line.

Liverpool’s pursuit of Alvarez has already been confirmed by the player’s agent and there is a real chance the Reds get their man in the next transfer window.

“I confirm that Liverpool were interested in Julian last season," Fernando Hidalgo told WinWinAllSports. “As for the future, this is not the right time to talk about it, as Julian is competing in important tournaments and is fully focused on them.”

It won’t be a cheap operation. Alvarez cost Atletico Madrid up to €95 million when he signed last summer and is under contract until 2030. This season he has broken the 20-goal mark already and has made his name with a sequence of incredible strikes.

Liverpool would be acquiring one of the most complete all-round strikers in the game if they manage to do a deal for Alvarez.
