Mo Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Virgil van Dijk are all able to speak to foreign clubs right now. They're free to sign pre-contracts with teams, too, allowing them to commit to leaving Liverpool at the end of their respective deals.

The Reds need to rectify that situation, of course. As it stands, they really will lose arguably their three most important players for zero compensation.

It's all completely mad. Liverpool better know what they're doing.

But that's only one side of the contract situation. The other is that Liverpool could actually take advantage and make their own free transfer.

Kimmich might be exactly that.

Joshua Kimmich to Liverpool

Bild's Christian Falk reported the other day that Liverpool are looking into the possibility of signing Kimmich. And now, in quotes published by Caught Offside, he's confirming that with an update on the player.

“It’s true that Liverpool are looking at Joshua Kimmich. Regardless, Manchester City are considered Bayern’s biggest rivals from the Premier League in the poker for Kimmich whilst there remains no agreement between the midfielder and the Bundesliga club,” says Falk.

“However, the Merseyside giants are also keeping an eye on the situation, with the German national team captain set to become a free agent in the summer.

“Liverpool are understood to remain interested in finding a player in this particular position, and Kimmich has been free to speak to overseas clubs since January 1.”

And so it appears that Liverpool aren't leading this race. Manchester City and Bayern Munich will both fancy their chances of signing Kimmich to a contract before the Reds.

But Liverpool are in this race and could view Kimmich as a perfect signing. He's versatile, fills two positions they're light in and he's free.

This is certainly one to watch. Even if Liverpool don't lead the race just yet, a lot could change over the coming months.
