Jordan Henderson, who lifted the Champions League and Premier League as Liverpool captain, has found himself at the centre of an extraordinary transfer drama this week.

Having joined Ajax following a regrettable spell in Saudi Arabia with Al Ettifaq, the 34-year-old has played 44 times for the Eredivisie giants since February 2024.

However over the course of the last few transfer windows, his future at the club has been up for debate. Last summer it looked like he could be returning to Britain with either Sunderland or Rangers but he remained at the Johan Cruyff Arena.

Events took a sour turn this week with Henderson threatening to go on strike if he didn’t get a move to Monaco. Here our Dutch expert Daniel Cabot Kerkdijk from Football Transfers picks up the story.

Fabrizio Romano broke the news yesterday that AS Monaco were close to agreeing a deal with Henderson and that a transfer would soon be done.

“Pretty much five minutes later, De Telegraaf reported that technical director Alex Kroes was however not letting him go and only a summer transfer would be a possibility.

“This, in turn, angered Henderson to the point where he threatened Ajax he would not play for the club anymore if they wouldn't terminate his contract so he could make the move.

“In the Europa League game against Galatasaray, he didn't wear the captain's armband, instead opting to give it to goalkeeper Remko Pasveer. Furthermore, when he was substituted in that game, he seemed to already bid farewell to the club and its fans.

“This morning, we got what seems to be the final twist: De Telegraaf reported that Henderson feels guilty and has promised to finish the season in Amsterdam. He admitted he got carried away and therefore acted unprofessionally.

“According to him, he was influenced by parties with an interest in a transfer to AS Monaco, who had told him that Ajax would prefer to see him leave due to his high salary.

“However, Kroes' determination in keeping him obviously showed the contrary is true and they want to keep him in Amsterdam.”

The idea of Henderson moving to Monaco in summer is intriguing from a Liverpool perspective. It would suggest that the Ligue 1 side are seeking midfield reinforcements - perhaps with one eye on replacing an outgoing star.

When he left Metz for Monaco last summer, Senegal sensation Lamine Camara was linked with a host of top European clubs. And ahead of the January transfer window he was even named as Liverpool’s ideal Martin Zubimendi alternative.

If Henderson ends up at the principality club then it could mean Adi Hutter’s side are ready to cash in on Camara.

The 21-year-old midfielder is under contract at the Stade Louis II until 2029 but it appears inevitable he will be leaving the club sooner rather than later.

This season he has played 16 times in the French top flight, scoring twice from midfield and contributing five assists. He has also been a mainstay for Monaco in the Champions League league phase, playing eight times.

A tireless runner and a progressive passer, given his age then Camara could boss the Liverpool midfield for the next decade.
