Liverpool transfer news: Johan Bakayoko says he'll ONLY move to 'top' club

One of Liverpool’s reported summer transfer targets says he’ll only move to a ‘top’ club this summer. He could follow in a former teammate’s footsteps.

Eindhovens Dagblad carries an interview with PSV Eindhoven winger Johan Bakayoko that goes into his future. The 21-year-old has been linked with a move away this summer after an excellent campaign.

Bakayoko played 47 games across all competitions as PSV strolled to an emphatic title win. They dropped just 11 points in 34 Eredivisie fixtures, scoring 111 times and finishing with a goal difference of 90.

Bakayoko was a standout star and one that could now move on. However, he's only going to leave for a 'top' club - if he leaves at all.

"If I were to leave Eindhoven, it would only be to a club that plays for the prizes just like PSV," said Bakayoko. "Becoming a champion is what I want. And win the Champions League. I have the qualities for that.

"I'm ready for the top. But PSV is also a top club, especially if many players from last season stay. And it's nice here.

"Yes, really. Nice. I think I've never radiated a moment that I play here reluctantly. The holiday was shortly after the European Championships, but it's great to get back to PSV. Last season's vibe is still there."

Liverpool like Bakayoko

Liverpool have been linked with the Belgian. Het Laatste Nieuws reported a couple of months ago that they were one of a few sides with Bakayoko on their shortlist.

Journalist Rik Elfrink says they 'certainly' like Bakayoko and could well make their move this summer. Whether they ultimately do, though, is another matter.

But it's a similar situation to Cody Gakpo. He was the star player at PSV back in 2022 and rejected moves to the Premier League because he wanted to wait for a 'top' club.

Then Liverpool came calling the following January and Gakpo jumped at the chance. History could well repeat itself with his former teammate.
