Liverpool SANCTIONED £45m sale to pay for Anthony Gordon

Liverpool sanctioned a huge sale this summer in order to pay for Anthony Gordon. The deal, however, collapsed at the last minute.

The Daily Mail reports that Liverpool did sanction a deal for Anthony Gordon in late June. The Reds were in talks with Newcastle United, who were desperately trying to scrap the cash together to meet Premier League spending rules.

Gordon was a high-profile sale who would solve their problems in one go. The player was eager to make the move, too, given he's a boyhood Red.

Initial talks didn't go too well, as Liverpool wouldn't meet the £100m asking price. Newcastle's idea of including Jarell Quansah didn't go down well, either, but a compromise was found.

Liverpool would sell Joe Gomez to Newcastle for £45m and then buy Gordon for £75m. That would allow the Magpies to secure the funds they needed while also signing in a top player. The Reds would then get a far easier deal financially.

But things fell apart. With medicals booked, Newcastle found a better way to solve their problems as they offloaded two different players for large fees. That way, they could keep Gordon - a player they didn't particularly want to lose in the first place.

Liverpool, though, remain interested in Gordon and could well push for a move later in the window. We'll just have to wait and see what happens there.

Joe Gomez's future

We exclusively reported earlier this year that Gomez was open to leaving Liverpool this summer. The Mail are now saying similar and that the defender would listen to clubs who want him.

Gomez is currently the longest-serving player in Liverpool's first team, having been at the club under Brendan Rodgers. He's been unable to find consistent game time, however, mostly because of injuries.

If the right offer comes along this summer, Gomez could still leave. £45m appears to be the asking price, after all.
