Liverpool had a quiet January when it came to incomings. The sporting director Richard Hughes opted to keep his powder dry in the transfer market and made no signings.

However, the club was active with departures and several youth and fringe players moved out on loan. Among those who left was Jayden Danns.

The 19-year-old striker has made his first-team breakthrough over the past year or so, even getting on the scoresheet under both Jurgen Klopp and Arne Slot. Danns was denied a summer loan move due to injury and came back into the first-team picture as the season progressed.

In order to get regular game time the decision was taken to allow Danns to join promotion-chasing Championship side Sunderland on deadline day. However, a back issue was discovered during his Black Cats medical, putting back his debut.

He has been as yet unable to train with the Sunderland squad, instead working on his rehabilitation with parent club Liverpool.

Danns has been making trips to Wearside to get acquainted with his team mates and was present with the squad delegation at the defeat to Leeds at Elland Road last week.

But Sunderland head coach Regis Le Bris admits he currently doesn’t know when he will have Danns available for selection. It could be as far away as a month as Danns seeks a full recovery from his back issue and awaits Liverpool’s approval for making a return.

“We are trying to build a connection with Jayden and the team,” the Frenchman told the press before the weekend loss to Hull City.

“Of course, it is not easy while he is injured, and we don't know how long, so we try to keep the connection and then we will see, maybe in one month he will be available. We have to see.

“I’ve spoken with him, absolutely. He is having his treatment at Liverpool, but we are doing what we can to build that connection for when he is ready.”
