Richard Hughes hasn't really conducted a lot of business as Liverpool's sporting director so far.

In fact, he has been running into a lot of dead ends instead. From his failure to sign Martin Zubimendi to his supposed interest in Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.

That's before we mention the lack of progress on the contract renewals front where the Reds' priority should be to tie Mo Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Virgil van Dijk to new deals.

None of that has worked in Hughes' favour so far. However, he could be about to redeem himself if the Reds' latest target becomes available and it could even smite Pep Guardiola and Man City.

Why Richard Hughes could expose another Man City failure with Jamie Gittens deal

According to reports, Liverpool scouts really admire Jamie Gittens from Borussia Dortmund.

Anfield Watch can confirm the interest in Gittens is genuine and the Reds are looking to add a left-winger to Arne Slot's squad in the summer transfer window.

That is why Khvicha Kvaratskhelia was eyed by the club and that is why Liverpool have also explored other options in the market.

However, right now the current player at the top of that shortlist appears to be Gittens who has a transfer valuation of €44.5M according to Football Transfers.

Gittens has exploded onto the scene at Dortmund and he's established himself as a key member of the club's starting line-up.

He's a very direct player, who excels in one vs one situations and thrives at carrying the ball forward and taking on defenders.

That makes him an ideal fit for Liverpool but it will still be difficult to prise him away from Dortmund. Last year, Anfield Watch spoke to the German club's CEO, Carsten Cramer, who revealed his side do not want to let Gittens go any time soon.

But it could have been even harder for Liverpool to get Gittens if he were to stay in England. The youngster actually came through Man City's academy before he made the switch to Germany.

The 20-year-old spent two years in City's academy and in an alternate universe could be lining up for Guardiola's side had he stayed.

But instead, like many other City academy talents he opted to choose a career path elsewhere. Like Jadon Sancho, Cole Palmer and Liam Delap, that's a move that has worked out well for Gittens.

And it could work out well for Liverpool too if they pounce on yet another wonderkid who Man City failed to keep.
