Ibrahima Konate in contract LIMBO

Liverpool fans can be forgiven for being slightly concerned over the contract situation of Ibrahima Konate.

Having faced practically the entire season with question marks over Virgil van Dijk, they could be set to do it all over again next term with the Dutchman’s defensive partner.

Van Dijk of course has now secured his Liverpool future until 2027 but Konate’s terms expire a year from now. The Frenchman, who joined in 2021, has a deal which expires in summer 2026 and has been linked with Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain.

Indeed the Ligue 1 side are ready to offer Konate the captain’s armband in order to attract him back to his hometown.

The central issue is that Liverpool have got to make a decision over the 25-year-old and do so quickly. Without a new contract, his value will rapidly plummet and Liverpool could be forced into a cut-price sale.

Konate seeing hefty pay rise

Worse still, they could lose him for free when his contract expires. Nonetheless, there appears to be a standoff between Konate and the club over a new deal.

The France international would like to be catapulted into the next level of earners at Anfield - at around £200,000 per week. It’s fair to say that given the lack of progress around an extension that Richard Hughes and FSG don’t see things the same way.

Indeed, now it’s been reported by Lewis Steele in the Daily Mail that there has been ZERO progress in the hunt for a new deal for Konate.

“Ibrahima Konate is out of contract in the summer of 2026 with zero progress made in recent months in terms of an extension,” a report states.

Fans might well have been hopeful that work was going on behind the scenes but it doesn’t appear to be the case.

We had to get into the last month of the season for Van Dijk and Mohamed Salah’s contracts to be renewed. The signs aren’t altogether too promising for Konate.

Nonetheless, sporting director Richard Hughes is reported to have prepared a shortlist in the event that Konate leaves.
