Liverpool have never really gone for the big, glamorous transfers. Their record is almost always far below the world's, for one thing.

In fact, Liverpool's record signing, Virgil van Dijk, was viewed by many at the time as a serious overpay for a middle-of-the-road defender. Those who thought that were unbelievably wrong, of course, but it's perhaps the finest example of the Reds' reluctance to sign superstars.

Even Thiago, who is probably the biggest name Liverpool have ever signed, came with the caveat of being injury-prone. The star signings never arrive and the Reds are far more inclined to sign players on the up who they can then develop into stars.

In fact, Liverpool don't even like handing out contracts to players over 30, as we're seeing with Mo Salah and Virgil van Dijk right now.

The gameplan is young players. Those just before their prime. Get them in and make it so you have an elite team down the line.

To be fair, it has worked under Jurgen Klopp as he helped build the best team in the world. At the same time, Liverpool have a chance to abandon their thinking and make the craziest transfer in their history.

It's just about worth it.

Harry Kane - yes, Harry Kane

Liverpool don't have an elite striker right now. Both Diogo Jota and Darwin Nunez have truly elite traits but they're ridiculously unreliable.

Jota just isn't consistently fit enough and Nunez just isn't consistently good enough. Liverpool will almost certainly push to sign a centre-forward - as Arne Slot has practically made clear.

"I will be happy if [a striker] becomes both," Slot said this week. "'Facilitator' and scoring goals himself — that is, again, what we want to achieve in the end."

Well, the best centre-forward on the planet at that is available. Per the Telegraph, Harry Kane will have a £54m release clause in his contract this summer.

Now, this just isn't the kind of transfer Liverpool make at all and we don't believe it'll actually happen. But surely Kane is actually the exact player Slot is looking for?

He's a supreme goalscorer who also likes to drop back and 'facilitate'. That's his entire game and it does seem near-perfect for this Liverpool team.

The only real draw back is that Kane turns 32 in the summer. Liverpool don't even want to give Mo Salah a long-term contract at 32 - let alone a new signing.

But we genuinely don't see a better signing for this current Liverpool team. Combining Kane and Salah, for one thing, would be truly ridiculous. This is a player with 25 goals and seven assists in 25 games this season.

Liverpool are already running away with the title. They've been the best team in the UEFA Champions League, too.

Add Kane to this team? Liverpool would be unstoppable. They'd win the lot. Best in the world.

Kane would be the biggest signing Liverpool have ever made if they went through with it. If not for his age, we imagine they'd try.

Instead, we'll just point out that this would be the craziest, most remarkable transfer Liverpool have ever made. And one that actually makes a lot of sense.
